SUN School

The SUN Initiative was founded by the City of Portland, OR and Multnomah County, OR in 1999 as a partnership of city, county, state, and schools.

SUN’s Mission is to improve the lives of children, their families and the community through partnering with local school communities to extend the school day and develop schools as “community centers” in their neighborhoods.

SUN schools strive to be a community “hub.” They link with other community institutions, such as the libraries, parks and community centers, neighborhood health clinics and area churches and businesses.

Student Health Center

César Chávez School is proud to be one of 12 schools in Multnomah County that has a Student Health Center on campus. Having a Student Health Center is like having a doctor’s office at our school—meaning that students can get care for yearly well check-ups, immunizations, lab tests and even mental health support.

There is never an out of pocket cost to families (no cost for appointments or prescriptions) and same day appointments are available. All students are welcome, regardless of income or access to insurance.

Appointments are recommended but walk-ins are welcome. Call 503-988-3815 for an appointment or with questions!

Free Geek Community Programs

Need a computer?
There are a few different ways you can get a computer from Free Geek.

Regardless of which program you’re eligible for, you must be located in or around the Portland metro area to perform your volunteer service and pick up your hardware at our facility.

If you aren’t eligible for these programs or simply don’t have the extra time to commit, don’t worry! You can still obtain a low-cost computer from The Free Geek Store.

Family Stability Program - Latino Network

Latino Network works to ensure our youth and their families have the best chance for success. For our low-income families, however, a job loss, unexpected emergency room visit, or rent hike can be detrimental to their children’s future and their families’ stability. Children often move from school to school while the family moves from one living situation to another.

Latino Network’s Family Stability Programs help families to connect to the resources and assistance they need. Our bilingual/bicultural case managers provide culturally-specific, intensive support to help families:

  • Secure stable, safe and affordable housing,
  • Find and maintain work or enroll in job training,
  • Locate emergency rent and utility assistance,
  • Connect to resources and build a supportive community,
  • Increase life-skill capabilities, and
  • Set goals for self-sufficiency.
