School Redesign

Our Model is Working Against Us

Last year, we faced cuts to many staff and administrative positions at Chávez. When we together raised our voices, the School Board heard and we were able to retain 4 positions.

When we raise our voices together we can drive change!

This month’s meeting we’ll be discussing the need for a school redesign.

César Chávez K-8 is really four schools in one.

We are the ONLY school in the Portland Public School system supporting 4 unique curricula in 1 school.

This means that César Chávez has unique and diverse needs as a school, requiring more resources at a time when resources are limited. This impacts:

  • Lower state testing schools and wider achievement gaps, disproportionately impacting students of color

  • Larger class sizes and more pressure on teachers

  • Strain on Middle School teachers

  • Limited electives for Middle School students

  • Requires divided attention from our administrators

Our school model should be serving the needs of our neighborhood, not working against those needs. The César Chávez PTA is advocating to the PPS School Board and Administration prioritize a school re-design conversation, since our current school model is NOT working. Join us Tuesday, Oct 14th at 5:30 as we talk about the impacts of our current school model, seismic building upgrades, and our plan to advocate for our students. This is a conversation that will have significant impacts on the future of our school.

We need your voice at the table!

Don’t Leave Chávez Behind: Let Us Rise!

Next Advocacy meeting is Tuesday, October 14th, 2025 at 5:30PM

Sign the Petition - No Cuts for Chávez

PPS is planning to cut 40 million from its budget next school year. 22.4 million will come from school budgets and the rest will come from the central office budget. Losing staff positions is felt differently at Chávez given the unique demands our school experiences. We are the ONLY school in the Portland Public School system supporting 4 unique curriculums in 1 school. While PPS has factored in some equity measures as a part of the budget cut process, there is a lack of understanding about the unique demands our school experiences and how that causes greater racial disparities for our students. We are asking for no budget cuts for our school during the 2025-26 school year. Sign the petition! This will be shared with the PPS School Board and Superintendent.
