César Chávez PTA Meeting Minutes 

March 1, 2023 5:30 – 7:00 pm

Chair: Veronica Arenas Marshall

1. Veronica called the meeting to order at 5:36 pm.
2. Quorum established.
3. Reading and approval of February minutes. Minutes approved as written. 

4. President’s Report/New business – Veronica Arenas Marshall – Veronica spoke about the North Portland Aquatic Center – Ken from Portland Parks and Recreation will come to Cesar Chavez on April 27th to discuss the pool. 

5. Treasurer’s Report – Blake Goud presented the report.

6. Committee Updates:

1. Transportation and Safety – Blake Goud presented information about this committee.  Leah Hinson made a motion for our PTA to support HB 3014, the Bike Bus Bill. Motion was seconded. Motion approved unanimously. Blake also said people at the Community Cycling Center and families at Miraflores Apartments are working on the walk/bike to school days. CCC is working with a group called Andando en Bicicleta y Caminando. Our PTA supports collaboration. 
2. Community updates – Keiona R Connor gave updates:
   1. Access Pass through Portland Parks and Rec- which is geared towards underserved communities – provides discounts up to 90% on classes and early registration. Next week Wednesday at 12:30 pm is typical registration – Cesar Chavez PTA is a partner organization and available for early sign ups which started today. You have to call and ask to register early, you have to tell them who the partner organization is. 
   2. Teen force through PP&R for 10-20 year olds – free pass into classes and drop in services at select community centers (including Matt Dishman and Charles Jordan). 
   3. Aerospace Science for Kids – Drop in program available for free to kids at PPS. 3-6 pm. They do homework help, they have aerospace activities, flight simulators etc. They are doing free week-long programming/summer camps over the summer as well. 
   4. Amazon wish list going for our PTA – right now we are supporting Ms. Alisia in the health center. Wish list is here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1RAYK14CGF0G0?ref=cm_sw_sm_r_un_un_X9T7oJgeOEB3w, Blake also mentioned there is a need for ponchos or rain gear that maybe we could add to the list. 
   5. STEAM Night – May 19th. We don’t have a committee yet. Veronica said Tom works for a solar energy company and there is a person at his company that does this. Veronica also asked if someone at ASK might come and present. Keiona will ask at ASK tomorrow. 
3. Auction – Leah presented about the change in the Auction – moving to an online auction from April 24-28th – Destiny McMahon will work on flyers and social media and is happy to help make auction requests in the community. Leah Hinson made a motion to repurpose auction funds for the silent auction in April 2023 to go to the Cesar Chavez PTA for school and community engagement. Motion seconded. Unanimous vote in favor.

4. NO SCHOOL March 27 – 31 Spring Break
5. No PTA MEETING in April 

Reminder that there will be a committee meeting to discuss smaller outdoor improvements that we could plan before there are funds raised for the big covered outdoor play area behind the school.  Tricia is coordinating the committee scheduling for anyone interested in joining. 

There was a discussion about finishing the fence decoration project, but leaving scheduling loose for an ‘outdoor beautification day’. Maybe to be done after pickup.
