César Chávez PTA Meeting Minutes 12/1/21

December 1, 2021 5:30 – 7pm

Zoom

Quorum met.

Chair: Veronica Arenas Marshall

  1. Veronica called the meeting to order at 5:36 pm.
  2. Reading and approval of minutes – November minutes approved as written.
  3. President’s Report – Veronica gave an Read-a-thon update along with Shona. We are at 19% of our goal, we are asking families to spread the word. Also, Ms. Munoz will do another parent coffee on December 13, 9:30-10:30 in English and 10:30-11:30 in Spanish.
  4. New business
    1. Charles Jordan volleyball clinics – Cristi Bryant spoke, she has been coaching volleyball for 15 years in North Portland. She is planning on hosting volleyball clinics at Charles Jordan every Thursday from 5:30-7 pm, it is called NoPo Volleyball Academy and it is free. Email questions to Cristi at nopovolleyball@gmail.com. Available for ages 10-18. Charles Jordan is not fully open so you have to enter from the McCoy court side. Right now parents are not allowed in the gym space. Masking required.
    2. Auction committee formation/discussion – Discussion around whether we should have an auction (whether it should be in person or virtual). Possible money earned to go to outdoor education (like Playworks). For Playworks the cost is $20,000 for the full program next year. Tammy said that we could possibly use Wayfinding Academy space for the auction and/or for PTA meetings if we want to meet in person and virtually (they have a screen available as well).
  5. Treasurer’s Report – Blake Goud gave the treasurer’s report.
  6. Committee Updates
    1. Transportation and Safety – Portsmouth Neighborhood updates: Paul Buchanan – chair of transportation and land use at Portsmouth Neighborhood Association discussed PBOT Slow streets program: https://www.portland.gov/transportation/safestreetspdx/what-slow-streets-program, Paul is asking for support from the Chavez PTA on a letter going to the city, they are asking for additional calming traffic on Houghton and Portsmouth. Leah Hinson made a motion for the Chavez PTA to sign the letter of support for the Portsmouth Neighborhood Association letter advocating for Slow Streets at Houghton and Portsmouth. Daniel seconded the motion. Unanimous vote in favor. Portsmouth Neighborhood Association meeting is next Tuesday and more discussion happening there regarding calming the streets around the school. Email  Blake at treasurer@cesarchavezpta.org if interested in joining the transportation and safety committee of the PTA.
    2. Banking update – We currently use Beneficial bank. There was a branch  on Lombard but that bank branch closed. The closest branch now is on MLK. This has been inconvenient. Bank signers would still be Richard Blake Goud, Veronica Arenas Marshall, Keiona Rochelle Connor and Nicole Dalton. Blake Goud made a motion to change banks from Beneficial to On Point bank and if they are not available we will use the next closest bank to the school with the same signers as listed above. Motion seconded by Daniel Ribeiro. Unanimous vote in favor. The goal is to get banks transitioned by February 2022.
