May PTA Meeting Minutes

César Chávez PTA General Meeting Minutes 

May 4, 2021 5:30 – 7pm

Quorum met

Chair: Veronica Arenas Marshall started the meeting as chair until Keiona R Connor joined at 5:43 pm

  1. Veronica called the meeting to order at 5:40.
  2. Reading and approval of minutes, minutes approved as written
  3. President’s Report – Keiona gave an update – the PTA has been giving out gifts for appreciation weeks to the Chavez administrative professionals, custodians, food service workers, teachers and EAs. Updates on teacher grants: 10 – 12 teachers have been given grants, teachers can continue to apply for grants until the end of June. Shona will work on promoting on social media where the grant money is going.
  4. Treasurer’s Report – Blake presented the report.
  5. New business:
  1. Discussion on proposed changes to board structure from co-presidency to a single president. Proposed changes to standing rules were discussed. Leah Hinson made a motion to update the standing rules to the proposed changes in the document that was reviewed by membership. Daniel Ribeiro seconded the motion, changes were approved unanimously as written.
  2. Officers: Blake Goud ran unopposed as treasurer and was voted in unanimously. Member-at-large position is vacant at this time, Keiona R Connor is running unopposed. Unanimous vote in favor. Veronica Arenas Marshall will be the president of the PTA starting in July. Veronica also updated on the fifth board member position: LaQuisha Minnieweather has been appointed to the fifth board member position in a vacancy to fill until May 2023.
  3. 2022-2023 budget: Proposed budget was presented to the membership. Leah Hinson made a motion to vote on the 2022-2023 budget as written. Daniel Ribeiro seconded. Budget passed by unanimous vote.

Committee Updates/Volunteer asks: 

  1. Transportation and Safety:  The Sunday before last there was a drive-by shooting near Chavez. Blake has been communicating with the Portsmouth Neighborhood Association about possible transportation interventions. 
  2. Events – end of year event – June 3rd proposed event in the evening, dinner, craft and a raffle. Committee formation and discussion at the end of the meeting. Leah, Veronica, Keiona and Trisha are working on this event. 
  1. Announcements and Volunteer asks
    1. No school Monday May 30, 2022
    2. 8th grade Field Trip to Oaks park June 2, 9:30-1:30 pm – the school needs 10 chaperones – contact Mr Tiffany to help
    3. 8th grade Promotion Ceremony at Roosevelt June 7, 2022 6 pm – 5-10 ushers needed at the ceremony, 10 volunteers needed at the reception at George Park for set up during the ceremony
    4. Field Day at Chávez June 8, 2022 – volunteers needed, contact Coach Ed
    5. Last day of school June 10, 2022
    6. Grecia, our community agent said that she is collecting information on volunteers and availability for when you can help at the school, contact her for further information.
    7. The school may be sending out messages asking for help setting up tables on nice weather days for outside lunch.
